Mumps




Overview
· Endemic
· Viral Disease
· Swelling in salivary and paratoid glands located above the jaw & under the ear
·
Before & after mumpsSpreads through Physical Contact by others;
o Sneezing
o Coughing
o Laughing
o sexual activity
· 200,000 cases reported before the existence of MMR Vaccine
· Mumps less contagious than measles and chickenpox
· Can become epidemic when heavy large populations have lack of healthcare
· Affects the Central Nervous System (Meningitis)

Body system affected
· Meningitis creates headaches and stiff necks
o 15 % of the population
· Viral Meningitis does not have a cure
· Most Common in men
· Difficult to fight against bacteria
· Affects Brain Cells
o Brain cells are connected to 3 membranes layered together connecting brain & spinal cord.
· Cerebrospinal fluid runs through body
o Accumulates in certain parts of the body attacking under the ear and creates swelling


Prevention
· MMR (measles-mumps-rubella)Vaccine developed in 1967
· First dose must be taken at the age of 1-2 years
o Before a year old is not required due to the fact that short term immunity was provided when being in the mother’s womb
· Second dose should be taken between the ages 4 and 6 but it can also be taken 4 weeks after the first dose up to the age of 12.
o Required to have before being admitted to kinder or 1st grade
· Recommended by:
o Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
o American Academy of Pediatrics
o American Academy of Family Physicians
· Certain restrictions apply & should not take this vaccine if have this following complications:
o Pregnancy
o AIDS
o Leukemia
o Lymphoma
o Generalized malignancy
· 80% effective against Mumps on first dose & 20% effective after second dose, having complete a 100% lifetime guarantee against the mumps.

Symptoms & Side Effects
· 1 week – 18 days to recover
· Contagious 3 days before symptoms begin through 9 days after diagnosis
· Severe headaches
· Loss of Appetite
· Low Grade Fever
· Abdominal Pain
· Swollen Cheeks
· Swelling or pin in testicles (Men)
· 30%- 40% of developing parotitis
· 40%-50% of developing Respiratory Symptoms
· Inflammation & Swelling of Brain & organs
o Encephalitis & Meningitis
· Men face:
o Orchitis
· Women face:
o Severe abdomen complications
§ Unilateral Pain
§ Tenderness
§ Edema
§ Erythema
§ Wrath of Scrotum

Treatment
· No Cure
· Bed Rest
· Plenty of Fluids
· Remain at home& stay away from public places for at least 5 days
· Ice packs should be place in swollen body parts
· If men have aching on testicles they should also place an ice pack in a comfortable way
· Flavored Ice treats
o Avoid chewing food
o Avoid sour foods and sour liquids
· Aspirin is prohibited below the age of 20 because it can cause Reye’s Syndrome
o Leading to Liver Failure or even death
· Report disease to a local health department for recordings.
